Weekend in Melaka: Getting There from Singapore by Van

Melaka packs an enormous amount into a single weekend: UNESCO-listed streets, a lantern-lit river, buzzing night markets and some of the best food in Malaysia. It sits about three to three-and-a-half hours from Singapore, which makes it one of the most rewarding short getaways across the border — and an easy run by private van, door to door.

Getting there

A van charter takes your group straight from your Singapore address to your Melaka hotel, with a comfort stop along the way if you would like one. There are no coach terminals to find and no transfers to juggle. Just as importantly, on the way home there is room in the boot for everything you have inevitably bought at Jonker Street.

What to see

Start in the historic core around Dutch Square, with its famous red buildings, then walk up to the ruins of St Paul's Church on the hill and across to the A Famosa fort. The old town rewards aimless wandering — antique shops, street art, temples and clan houses sit side by side. As the sun goes down, a Melaka River cruise shows the city from a different angle.

Where to eat

Melaka is a food destination in its own right. Try Nyonya cuisine, the city's signature chicken rice balls, satay celup (a bubbling communal hotpot of skewers), and a bowl of cendol to cool down. On Friday to Sunday evenings, the Jonker Street night market is a feast on its own — ask your driver for the stalls and shophouses locals rate.

Making it a weekend

Where to base yourself

Melaka rewards staying central. The heritage core either side of the river — Jonker Street, the old shophouse lanes, the waterfront — is compact and genuinely walkable, and staying inside it means the evening is yours without arranging transport for every move. The trade-off is access: some of those lanes are narrow, one-way, or closed to traffic when the night market runs, so the final approach to a heritage hotel can be tighter than the booking photos suggest. Newer accommodation sits a little further out with easier access and parking but leaves you dependent on transport each evening. Neither is wrong; they suit different weekends. If you tell us where you are staying when you book, we will tell you honestly whether a van can reach the door or whether the driver will need to stop nearby and help with the bags from there.

Getting beyond the old town

A first visit to Melaka can be spent entirely in the heritage core, and many are. A second usually is not. The coast at Klebang, the food away from the tourist streets, the outlying temples and the newer developments along the water are all a drive rather than a walk from the centre, and they are where the weekend opens up. This is the point at which the structure of your booking starts to matter. A one-way transfer delivers you and leaves. A day charter keeps the van and driver with you and lets you move between places as the day suggests, which for a group of six or eight is usually cheaper than arranging each leg separately as well as considerably less trouble. Planning the weekend as one booking

A Melaka weekend usually works out simplest booked in one go rather than leg by leg. There is a Johor and Melaka two-day rate that keeps the same van and driver with you across both days, and for a group intending to move around it generally comes in below separate transfers plus local transport. If you only need getting there and back, two one-way legs booked together is the cheaper structure.
