Singapore to Penang is the longest transfer on our route list — roughly 680 kilometres and eight to nine hours on the road, running almost the entire length of peninsular Malaysia. It is a serious undertaking and we plan it as one: proper rest stops, a departure time chosen so the group is not arriving exhausted, and the same driver and vehicle from your Singapore door to George Town or wherever on the island you are headed. Doing this drive yourself in a hire car is possible; doing it with a group, luggage and a checkpoint at the start is a different proposition entirely.
On a drive this length, when you leave decides how the day feels. An early morning departure from Singapore generally clears the checkpoint before it builds and puts you in Penang by evening. Some customers prefer an overnight run, which is quieter on the road and gets you there for the start of the following day — we operate 24 hours, so either works. What we would not recommend is a late-afternoon start, which tends to combine the worst checkpoint window with arrival in the small hours.
